Background

This project consisted of the repair and conservation of seven concrete wheat silos in Glasdon Dock. The silo’s were built in the 1970’s and were in urgent need of repair because the concrete walls were in poor condition, which ultimately would have impacted the effective operation of the site.

At over 40m high with an internal diameter of 12m, the silos had to remain in operation whilst the restoration works were completed, so the maintenance had to be phased for each silo to ensure no loss of service to the site.

Working in a marine environment, the scheme involved many challenges to overcome because of the lack of a substantial water supply and a significant physical aspect of getting the equipment and operatives to the upper elevations.

The Outcome

Once the scaffold had been erected, a further condition survey was completed, which revealed the silos needed far more rehabilitation work than was first envisaged at tender stage; however,r Buxton Water were able to adapt quickly to this change and ensure work continued uninterrupted.

We repaired the concrete by fixing the external cracking and spalled concrete and then replacing several window frames. Buxton Water then undertook the application of elastic joints around doors and window frames and a coating system on the external parts of the concrete silo walls.
